Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?
This spring I will graduate from Ohio University's Professional MBA Program. Some of my friends and colleagues were puzzled by this late career endeavor. To me, it made perfect sense.
Subjecting myself to courses in analytics, accounting, finance, marketing, management information systems, leadership, entrepreneurship, and strategic management when I would rather be golfing does seem to have a masochistic component to it. However, to meet the increasingly complex issues faced by our clients and to continue to deliver to our clients value in the form of superior products and services at reasonable rates, Davis & Young must define itself in the context of the current competitive environment. Davis & Young is blessed to have a host of long and loyal clients. We cherish the trust that our clients have placed in us. However, we understand that "time does not stand still." To compete in this environment, it is incumbent upon us to recognize and understand the ever-evolving needs of our clients and respond to these needs in an innovative manner that allows us to maintain and grow our relationships with our "core" clients, which of course, includes you.

Thom Wright celebrated 30 years with Davis & Young on Valentine's Day. With him is Legal Assistant, Lisa Andrews, who will be celebrating 28 years with the firm this summer. |
So how does Davis & Young intend to deliver on this promise to provide you with added value? Some of our core competencies include:
* The ability to provide statewide delivery of D&Y quality products and services;
* An experienced stable of litigation attorneys who have more than 400 collective years of trial experience;
* The ability to provide our clients access to one of the most sophisticated insurance coverage teams in Ohio; and
* A blend of attorneys steeped in the D&Y tradition who understand that we operate in a technology driven world.
Davis & Young recognizes the importance to our clients of stability, history, and tradition. However, we also recognize that these enduring values are a bridge to the future.
It is the future that we have in mind when we invite you to DAVIS & YOUNG'S 2013 ANNUAL LAW SEMINAR at the House of Blues on FRIDAY, APRIL 19, 2013. Our forward-looking approach will be on full display at this year's exciting seminar.
Special guests include Alec Scheiner, the President of the Cleveland Browns. Justice Judith French of the Ohio Supreme Court will address some emerging trends in Ohio law.
Other developing trends that impact all of us personally and professionally are on the agenda. Topics will include a discussion on fracking claims and the implications of fracking in Ohio, as well as privacy issues and social media.
After the seminar we hope you can join us for a reception in the House of Blues Cambridge Room where we will be entertained by the Chris Allen Band.
We look forward to seeing you at the seminar!

Perseverance Leads to Justice in the Court of Appeals Prompt and fair resolution of claims and litigation is usually our objective when defending cases for clients and their insurers. But some cases just cannot be resolved, and justice is not always swift. A case that Jan Roller has been defending for a towing company and its insurer illustrates this point, and demonstrates the tenacity (and some would say unreasonableness) of some plaintiffs’ lawyers. |

Construction Defect Damages and CGL Coverage Commercial General Liability ("CGL") coverage is one of the most common forms of commercial insurance purchased by construction businesses. Across Ohio and the country, courts are divided on the issue of whether standardized CGL policies provide liability coverage for damages sought by property owners for "defective construction" or "defective workmanship." |

A Current Consideration of the Primary Assumption of the Risk Defense More recently, efforts have been made to extend the application of the primary assumption of the risk doctrine to commonplace activities and events which do not involve sporting or recreational activities or events. |
